march 21th: day 18

day 18- Dhukla to Lobuche 4910m (16109ft)

dhukla was dirty and desperate, and i was happy to leave.  but, the stop helped with acclimatization, so it had to be done.

this days in higher elevation were difficult from the elevation, which made it difficult to catch one's breath during exertion.  but the distances covered were much shorter than the more difficult, beginning of the trek.

continued up, and an quiet walk through the eerie section of the trail with hundreds of memorials set up for the folks that attempted to climb everest (or one of the other peaks) and did not make it back.  my modest goals of making it to base camp and kala pattar are the extent of my drive to height.  i wonder what spurs these folks on, especially as it is no longer a rare achievement (over 4500 people)?  and it costs between $70-100,000 to do.  met a guy on his way to attempt it, quite a frump, from seattle.  not my type of comapany.

so we got to lobuche without incident, and even had time to climb up a ridge for a views of the glacier.  and stayed in a decent guest house, before the last stop in gorak shep, which i heard was quite grim (a low of -15F at night!).
